NCT01710332 is CONTAIN, a prospective pilot of intravitreal aflibercept for chronic central serous chorioretinopathy. Pitcher and colleagues studied 12 patients, all men, with a six-month treatment course and monthly visual-acuity and optical-coherence-tomography assessments. This is not neovascular age-related macular degeneration. 12

Mean central macular thickness decreased from 400 μm (SD 104) to 306 μm (SD 94), P=.03. However, the authors reported no significant change in visual-acuity metrics. The anatomical finding and the absence of demonstrated visual improvement must both be reported; less retinal fluid is not automatically better sight. 2

The authors described treatment as well tolerated during the six-month study, but a 12-person uncontrolled pilot cannot establish uncommon-event safety or superiority to observation or another treatment. It provides a preliminary anatomical signal requiring controlled evaluation, not proof of a standard treatment or a general vision-restoration claim. 2
