This trial tested intravenous native GLP-1 during cardiac surgery, not a modern long-acting weight-loss injection. Patients undergoing elective surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass received GLP-1 or placebo, with protocol-directed insulin available in both groups. 1234
The original publication analyzed 77 patients: 37 GLP-1 and 40 placebo, compared with 80 enrolled in the registry. Mean glucose over the intraoperative period was 12.2 mg/dL lower with GLP-1 (95% CI 2.3–22; P=.015). The report also states that hypoglycemia incidence did not differ significantly. 123
This supports an intraoperative glucose-lowering effect under a controlled anesthesia protocol. It does not establish reduced mortality, better long-term diabetes control, or the safety of continuing or withholding other GLP-1 medicines around surgery; those are different questions. 123
