Study: Accuracy of patients' self-reports and clinicians' impressions of oral antipsychotic adherence in schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, associated with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. 12

Design and measurements: The protocol planned 50 participants followed for 12 weeks. Subjective assessments were compared with electronic medication-container monitoring, pill counts, and selected blood drug measurements. Patient and clinician assessments occurred at baseline and follow-up; pill counts were repeated every two weeks. 12

What is established: The historical record is completed. No sensitivity, specificity, correlation, or rate of overestimated adherence was verified. Electronic container opening is also not identical to demonstrated ingestion. This is a study of measurement accuracy, not a randomized trial proving one antipsychotic more effective than another. 12
