This phase 2 HIV study tested a therapeutic MRKAd5 gag/pol/nef vaccine versus placebo in people treated early after HIV infection. The NIAID/ACTG protocol was AIN504/A5218. Its registry reports 25 actual participants and completion in October 2010. 12

Participants were already receiving suppressive antiretroviral therapy. Vaccination was followed, in eligible participants, by a tightly monitored analytical treatment interruption, with viral-load/CD4 monitoring and restart criteria. Planned outcomes included HIV RNA after interruption and serious/severe toxicities. This was not a preventive vaccine trial in uninfected people. 12

No verified efficacy estimate from this exact study was established here. The background papers linked in its record predate the trial and cannot be treated as its results. The protocol provides no justification for independently stopping prescribed antiretroviral treatment. 12
